Northwest College

Grants and Scholarships

Northwest College School of Beauty recognizes how quickly education costs can add up! Your success is our goal. Over-borrowing and maxing out federal student aid such as loans, can have a very negative impact on your future. In our efforts to help you become a successful cosmetology professional, we have compiled a list of Federal and State Grants, as well as scholarships that are available to help offset the costs of attending cosmetology school. Our school code is 014351 and appears as NORTHWEST COLLEGE OF HAIR DESIGN CLACKAMAS. Click here to start your FAFSA.

Grants

Grants and scholarships are often called “gift aid” because they are free money—financial aid that doesn’t have to be repaid. Grants are often need-based, while scholarships are usually merit-based. Grants and scholarships can come from the federal government, your state government, your college or career school, or a private or nonprofit organization. Do your research, apply for any grants or scholarships you might be eligible for, and be sure to meet application deadlines! Students applying for any Federal or state-based grants must first fill out and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, before being considered eligible for any award money.

This is the most popular of all government financial aid programs. The Pell grant is designed to help low income students afford the costs of a college education. The grant is open to all college-bound students who meet the minimum income requirements. Final award amounts are based on financial need, total cost of attendance and full or part time enrollment status. The maximum award amount is $5,815.00. To determine eligibility for Federal Pell Grants, you must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Sponsored by the Oregon Student Access Commission, this grant is designed for low income students attending college for career training. Applicants must be residents of Oregon state. The Oregon Opportunity Grant (OOG) is Oregon's largest state-funded need-based grant program for students planning to go to college.

You must be a resident of Oregon who is attending a licensed school of barbering, hair design, cosmetology, or manicure in Oregon that participates in Federal Title IV financial aid programs and participates in the Barbers and Hairdressers Grant Program. You must be enrolled full-time in a program which is at least nine months long or 900 clock hours. You must have a significant need for financial help.

The Department of Human Services (DHS) Independent Living Program (ILP) has received Chafee Education and Training Voucher (ETV) funding to help current or former foster care youth with postsecondary education and training.

ACE Grants are designed to help you begin your career in cosmetology. ACE Grants are the first ever industry-wide effort to encourage highly motivated and qualified individuals to join the world of cosmetology.

Cosmetology Program Scholarships

A scholarship is an award of financial aid for a student to further their education. Travis Henry, @bigTtheBarber, Class of 2011

I entered Beauty School not sure what to expect and with no prior cutting/barbering experience. I did research on a few local Beauty Schools and went with what felt right for my family and the locations that worked for me. The campuses were beautiful, the staff was awesome, and there was a variety of different students. Beauty school is what you make of it. It's the school's responsibility to teach you the rules, help you achieve greatness, and give you the tools you need to succeed in this profession. Northwest College did that for me. This business is 75% Passion and 25% skills, NW College can get you those skills if your willing to do your part. I graduated in March of 2011; I'm now a Certified Educator for Eufora International, Owner of Chop Shop Hair Studio, Co-Owner of  Doo or Dye Salon, President of the North West Barbers Alliance, and Business Partners with Shave Envy. You can achieve anything you want with the right training, support, and a passion.” - Travis Henry, Class of 2011

Jessica Koch, Class of 2014

I was very scared going back to school after nearly 20 years, but attending NW College in Tualatin made it an easy transition. I had no idea what to expect from beauty school or if I was making the right career move, but in no time at all I knew NW College was the right decision for me. I had amazing instructors that were encouraging and pushed me to trust in myself and my creative abilities. I graduated on November 22, 2014 and because of the great academics of NW College passed my state boards and became licensed on November 26, 2014. I had interviewed with several salons leading up to my graduation and started working immediately as an independent contractor on December 2, 2014.. Attending NW College was the best decision of my life, I’ve never been happier going to work each day. I LOVE my career choice as a licensed Cosmetologist.” - Jessica Koch, Class of 2014
