The History of the Pompadour

The Pompadour we see today is one of the most popular hair trends of this decade. Although fashion forward hipsters are sporting this look everywhere, the roots of this hairstyle started long ago.

This style named after Madame de Pompadour (1721-1764) Mistress of King Louis XV, has transitioned over the years but keeps showing up in fashion every so often.

After it’s initial popularity among fashionable women in the 18th century, the style was revived as part of the Gibson Girl look in the 1890s and continued to be In-Vogue until WW1.


The style was in fashion again for women in the 1940s. Actress and World War II pin-up girl Betty Grable wearing another variant of the pompadour style, 1943.The men’s version as worn by early country and R&R stars such as Elvis Presley was popular in the 1950s and early 1960s.

Variations of the Pompadour style continue to be worn by men and women in the 21st century.
